16/24 H.P.

W/n 5821 in "preservation". Cab is non-standard and engine covers
are of incorrect pattern.
The 16/24 H.P. type comprised
two batches of locos that were very different in appearance but were equipped
with similar engine types. This was the twin-cylinder Ailsa Craig DF2, CFS2 and
later RFS2 diesel of 4-in bore and 5-in stroke. So as far as Motor Rail were
concerned they were the same class. Motor Rail were the first customers to
receive Ailsa Craig's new monobloc engines, such as the CF, as opposed to the
earlier DF engine with separate crankcase and block.
Number Series
5821-5832 (built between 1934 and
1938).
Note: This batch was of the
channel-framed variety, using the same frame as the 20/35 H.P. type.
Only one survives in the UK today, this being 5821, now preserved by John
Rowlands.
7601-7614 (built between 1939 and
1940).
Note: These were of the plate-framed variety (like the 20/28 H.P.), and were thought to have been fitted with RFS2 engines. They were visually different to the 20/28 in that they were right hand drive. None survive in the UK.
