12/16 H.P.

The 12/16 H.P. type was introduced in 1932, being available as either a 2-ton or 3-ton version. It was fitted with the Ailsa Craig DD2 2-cylinder diesel engine of 3-in bore and 5-in stroke. The DD2 was Ailsa Craig's first true diesel engine (as opposed to lamp started semi-diesels) and produced 13 B.H.P. at 1000 R.P.M. and 16 B.H.P. at 1500 R.P.M.

The first of these locos was supplied to the Birmingham, Tame & Rea District Drainage Board and was despatched from Bedford on 24th March 1932. As can be seen from the drawing below, the frame is the same type as used on the 20/35 H.P. petrol locos.
